Long before we started making sofas, we spent years taking other people's furniture apart to repair it. Not because we wanted to repair furniture forever. Because we wanted to understand it. Every broken spring. Every sunken seat. Every collapsed frame. Raised exactly the same question.

After thousands of repairs, the same answers kept appearing. The same failures. The same compromises. The same decisions, quietly determining how long a sofa would last.

A single weak point in a frame can determine the entire lifespan of an otherwise excellent sofa. Our experience repairing furniture taught us that strength doesn't come from making everything bigger, or heavier. It comes from putting the right materials, in the right places.
That's why our sofas are often lighter than many conventional sofas, while remaining exceptionally strong, where it matters most. We use kiln-dried hardwood and frame-grade plywood exactly where experience has shown they're needed.

Which is why we're happy to offer a 25-year warranty on all our frames. We considered offering a 50-year frame warranty, as we expect it'll last even longer than this. But decided this sounded too much like a marketing gimmick. We're confident you'll never need to make a claim under warranty. But in the unlikely event that you do, we'll fix it, free of charge.

That changed the way we think about frame construction. We realised that the structure of a sofa should take up no more space than it needs to.
Every unnecessary inch of floorspace belongs to your home. Not a sofa frame. The strength of our frames allow a smaller footprint than conventional sofas, whilst also enjoying a larger seating area.
Our frames are designed to fit
One key lesson we learned had nothing to do with comfort, or durability.
We've seen too many perfectly good sofas become impossible to live with simply because nobody considered how they would reach the room—or fit into the one they were intended for.
A tight staircase. An awkward turn. A narrow doorway.
No sofa lasts forever. But most sofas are built in a way that makes future renewal difficult. If something eventually wears out—or you simply decide you'd like a different fabric years later—replacing the entire sofa often becomes the simplest option.
We came at it from a different direction. When you've spent years repairing furniture, you stop seeing the end of a sofa's first life as the end of the sofa itself. So renewable construction is designed into every Craft sofa from the very beginning.
Cushion inserts can be renewed. Covers can be replaced. Webbing can be renewed. Individual parts can be repaired if the need arises.
An otherwise excellent sofa shouldn't become landfill simply because one part has reached the end of its life.
Naturally, we'd be delighted to renew it for you ourselves.
But if we're not the ones doing it, we've designed our sofas so that any competent upholsterer can service and renew them without unnecessary difficulty.
Building it properly is only half the story.
Helping people choose properly is the other half.
One lesson surprised us.
Many of the sofas people wanted us to work on weren't poor-quality sofas. They simply weren't the right sofas for that home.
These sofas would be;
Too large. Customers asked us to alter sofas to make them smaller — sometimes because they couldn't return them.
Too soft. We added additional support, replaced webbing and swapped soft seat cushions for firmer ones after just a few months use.
The wrong fabric. We found ourselves recovering sofas that were less than a year old, due to fabric that stained or bruised easily.
The wrong seat filling. Feather or fibre cushions were replaced with reflex foam because the customer hadn't realised how differently they would feel or behave in everyday use.
The wrong proportions. We altered sofas to work better within rooms they hadn't really been designed for.
There was often nothing fundamentally wrong with the sofa.
It simply wasn't right for the people buying it. Or the homes they lived in.
That experience changed the way we thought about selling sofas.
